The chair of Information Management at D-MTEC auf ETH Zürich is a sister-chair to the chair of Technology Management at the Institute of Technology Management at the University of St. Gallen. Prof. Elgar Fleisch, who has a double appointment at both universities as a full professor, splits his time equally among Zürich and St. Gallen. Both chairs share the same research interest, misson, Labs and Focus Areas.
With the ongoing miniaturization of information technology a new phenomenon is emerging; mini-computers are no longer isolated hardware objects such as personal computers, laptops, or mobile phones. Rather, mini-computers have become an inseparable part of many physical objects and locations. Former purely physical systems are thus expanding to Cyber-Physical Systems, or in other terms, to the Internet of Things, leading to a seamless combination of digital and physical system features.
The purpose of the research of Elgar Fleisch and his team is (a) to understand this ongoing merge of the digital and physical world in the dimensions of technology, applications, and implications, and (b) to leverage this understanding in the design of new technologies and applications for the benefit of the economy and society.
The group organizes its research in Labs that span across ETH Zürich, University St. Gallen, other academic institutions, and research partners from industry. For a list of Labs, Focus Areas and other research oriented information please visit the research section.
