Dr. Florian Michahelles is a head of research group of the Web of Things research group of Siemens in Berkeley/California. He focuses on applying semantic and web technologies to machine to machine communication in order to make the Internet of Things a reality in industrial settings.

Dr. Florian Michahelles (CV) was a lecturer at ETH Zurich, associate director of the Auto-ID Labs Zurich/St. Gallen and manager of the labs of Prof. Fleisch at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics at ETH Zürich from 2005-2013.

Over the past 7 years he has concentrated on developing new service concepts in close collaboration with partners from industry. His central research interest is the conception, development and evaluation of the electronic integration of daily‐life objects and the connected, independent exchange of information between these objects (internet of things). His fields of interest comprise both applications for the private end‐user as well as for commercial use: architectures of the internet of things, quantified self / personal informatics, and connecting social networks to physical products.

His research is documented in more than 100 peer-reviewed publications (google citations, DBLP, ACM DL, MS Academic Search). He also has been listed among the Internet of Things Top 100 Thinkers.

In December 2004, Dr. Michahelles received his PhD from ETH Zurich for his research in participative design of wearable computing applications and the development of innovative business cases for ubiquitous computing. At this time Dr. Michahelles was a researcher in the former group of Prof. Bernt Schiele at ETH Zurich where he worked for the EU-funded Smart-Its project lead by Prof. Hans-Werner Gellersen and the ETH-funded Wearable Computing Poly Project lead by Prof. Gerhard Tröster (see the old homepage for research topics and publications).

Before, Michahelles obtained a M.Sc (Diplom-Informatiker Univ.) in computer science and psychology from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany in 2001. In spring 2000, Dr. Michahelles was also a Sloan Visiting Fellow at MIT Sloan School of Management where he focused his studies on entrepreneurship and management of innovation. During this time he also worked as an MIT E-Lab consultant for the Spanish start-up company
